Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal at Spectators

The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 penalty on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal directed at fans during a Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium.

Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, though he insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“That was regrettable. That was essentially an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”

He further emphasized that the signal was completely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the incorrect finger,” he noted. “It was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”

League Precedent for Owner Fines

This is not the first time an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Recent examples include:

  • Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
  • Former Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.

Jones, a figure who is recognized for his publicity flair, possesses an approximate wealth of $16 billion, making the fine manageable for the billionaire proprietor.

Offseason Issues and Media Attention

The incident follows a controversial preseason for Jones, who faced significant backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt star defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Moreover, Jones was a prominent figure in a streaming series that explored his influence in developing the Cowboys into the world’s most valuable sports franchise, despite its modern-era title shortcomings.

The league’s decision to fine Jones highlights its ongoing initiative to uphold proper behavior among all franchise representatives, regardless of their position or wealth.
