Used Fishing Nets from French Coast Become Essential Shield To Counter Enemy Drones in Ukraine

On the port areas of the Breton shoreline, piles of discarded fishing nets have become a regular occurrence.

The operational period of deep-sea fishing nets typically ranges between 12 and 24 months, post-usage they become worn and beyond repair.

Presently, this horsehair netting, previously employed for catching monkfish from the marine bottom, is finding new application for a different kind of capture: hostile aerial vehicles.

Humanitarian Project Transforms Discarded Gear

A Breton charity has dispatched two shipments of nets totaling 174 miles to the conflict zone to defend military personnel and citizens along the combat zone where conflict intensifies.

The enemy deploys low-cost aerial vehicles equipped with detonation devices, controlling them by distance operation for spans of up to 25 kilometers.

"Over the last two years, the war has evolved. Before we didn't even think about drones, but now it's a aerial combat conflict," commented a humanitarian organizer.

Tactical Use of Marine Mesh

Defense units use the nets to establish corridors where aerial vehicle blades become entangled. This method has been described as spiders catching flies in a net.

"The Ukrainians have told us they require specific any old nets. They received numerous that are ineffective," the organizer continued.

"The nets we are sending are made of specialized material and used for deep-sea fishing to catch monkfish which are quite powerful and strike the mesh with a force similar to that of a drone."

Growing Implementations

Originally employed by medical personnel safeguarding treatment facilities near the combat zone, the nets are now employed on transport routes, bridges, the medical facility access points.

"It's incredible that such basic material functions so efficiently," commented the humanitarian director.

"We face no lack of fishing nets in this region. It's a problem to know where to send them as multiple companies that recycle them have ceased operations."

Logistical Difficulties

The humanitarian group was formed after community members contacted the organizers requesting support for essential provisions and healthcare materials for communities back home.

A team of helpers have driven two lorry consignments of aid 2,300 kilometers to the Polish-Ukrainian frontier.

"After being informed that Ukraine needed nets, the fishing community reacted rapidly," commented the humanitarian coordinator.

Drone Warfare Progression

Russia is using FPV unmanned aircraft resembling those on the consumer sector that can be piloted by wireless command and are then armed with combat charges.

Russian pilots with instant visual data guide them to their destinations. In certain regions, defense units report that all activity ceases without drawing the notice of groups of "destructive" suicide aircraft.

Defensive Methods

The marine mesh are extended across supports to create netting tunnels or used to conceal fortifications and vehicles.

Friendly aerial vehicles are also outfitted with pieces of netting to release onto opposition vehicles.

In recent periods, Ukraine was dealing with more than numerous aerial vehicles daily.

Global Aid

Hundreds of tonnes of old nets have also been provided by fishermen in Scandinavian nations.

An ex-marine industry representative commented that coastal workers are more than happy to help the war effort.

"They are proud to know their former gear is going to assist in protection," he stated publicly.

Funding Limitations

The association currently lacks the monetary means to send more supplies this year and negotiations are occurring for Ukraine to provide transport to collect the material.

"We will help acquire the material and prepare them but we are without the monetary resources to continue managing shipments ourselves," stated the organization representative.

Real-World Constraints

A defense forces representative explained that protective mesh corridors were being implemented across the eastern territory, about three-quarters of which is now reported to be occupied and controlled by opposition military.

She added that opposition vehicle controllers were increasingly finding ways to circumvent the protection.

"Mesh does not represent a complete solution. They are just a particular aspect of defense from drones," she stressed.

An ex-agricultural business owner shared that the Ukrainians he had met were moved by the support of Brittany's coastal communities.

"The reality that those in the fishing industry the distant part of the continent are dispatching gear to assist their protection efforts has created moving moments to their eyes," he remarked.
