Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
